Why Fire Curtains & Fire Shutters Matter

Containing Fire, Protecting Lives

Fire curtains and fire shutters are a vital part of a building’s passive fire protection strategy. By sealing off openings in fire-rated walls, lift lobbies, stairwells, atriums, and serving hatches, they help to contain a fire to its compartment of origin, slow or prevent the spread of fire and smoke through the building, maintain protected escape routes for occupants, buy critical time for safe evacuation and for the fire service to respond, and limit damage to your property, stock and business continuity.

Whether you need a discreet curtain that disappears into the ceiling or a robust steel shutter that doubles as security, we will help you choose the right solution for your building’s risk profile and layout.

Fire Protection for All Premises

Our fire curtains and fire shutters help contain a fire, hold back smoke, and protect the people inside your building.

Fire Rated Electric Roller Shutters

Fire-Rated Roller
Shutters

Fire-rated roller shutters provide a tough physical barrier built from interlocking steel laths running in galvanised steel guides, and can offer everyday security as well as fire protection.

They are tested and certified to BS EN 16034 and BS EN 1634-1, the current standards that replaced the older BS 476: Part 22 for new installations. Depending on the model and application, they are available in integrity ratings from 60 minutes (E60) and 120 minutes (E120) up to 240 minutes (E240) — that’s up to four hours of fire resistance.

In the event of a fire alarm activation or power failure, the shutter descends automatically to form a fire-resisting barrier. They can be supplied galvanised as standard, or powder-coated in your choice of colour to match your shopfront or branding.

Fire Curtains

Where a steel shutter would be too bulky or intrusive, a fire curtain offers a discreet alternative. Made from flexible, fire-resistant fabric that rolls down from a slim headbox, fire curtains can be concealed within the ceiling until needed — ideal for open-plan spaces, retail environments, atriums, and modern commercial interiors where appearance matters.

In normal use, the curtain is invisible. On activation by the fire alarm or detection system, it descends in a controlled manner to create a fire and smoke barrier, then fails safe in the event of a power cut.

Active fire curtains in the UK are specified, tested and maintained to BS 8524, the British Standard widely regarded as the definitive benchmark for fire curtain barrier assemblies. We will help you choose a curtain that suits both the fire strategy for your building and the look you want to achieve.

Making Your Fire Barrier Safe and Compliant

There are a variety of inherent risks with the use of powered fire curtains and shutters and it is important that these are mitigated or controlled. Controlled descent speed, audible and visual warning, and fail-safe operation all help protect anyone beneath the barrier.

You can be assured that new fire curtains and shutters installed by Door Support are compliant and have the necessary safety measures incorporated.

We can also often inspect, repair, and retrofit existing fire curtains and shutters where they are found to have safety-critical or other hazards. Contact us to find out more about fire shutter maintenance.
